Real-Time Ultrasound as an Enhanced Means of Pregnancy Diagnosis in Swine
Currently, daily boar exposure is the earliest and best means to diagnose open sows and gilts. Daily boar exposure and intensive observation for signs of estrus
(heat) usually begin around day 17 after breeding. Females responding positively to the boar are typically rebred or possibly culled.
Since daily boar exposure does not catch all open sows and gilts in heat, producers usually employ some type of pregnancy detection.
