Biosecurity for Poultry Flocks
Biosecurity is a practice designed to prevent the spread of disease onto your farm. It is
accomplished by maintaining the facility in such a way that there is minimal traffic of biological
organisms (viruses, bacteria, rodents, etc.) across its borders. Biosecurity is the cheapest, most
effective means of disease control available. No disease prevention program will work without it.

Biosecurity of Poultry Facilities
Disease outbreaks cost poultry producers and related industries millions of dollars a year in lost revenue. To minimize
these losses, disease prevention methods, including practices which control disease causing organisms (pathogens) and
their vectors, must be followed. Such disease control measures are collectively termed biosecurity.

Effective Broiler House Clean Out And Disinfection Techniques
The main goal of most cleaning and disinfection programs is to prevent poultry disease outbreaks. Other benefits are
improved weight gain, decreased feed conversion, and a decreased number of birds condemned at slaughter.
After the 1984 avian influenza outbreak in the Northeast, several companies took a closer look at the pros and cons of
thorough cleaning and disinfection programs. No one was quite sure how often to thoroughly clean and disinfect broiler
farms or how long that disinfection would last. The problem was studied from several different angles, and it was found
that if reasonable biosecurity measures are followed, the benefits of cleaning and disinfection will last approximately one
year.

Guidelines For Risk Reduction of Microbial Introduction Into Poultry Flocks and Products
These are general guidelines intended to reduce the risk of introduction
of infectious and non-infectious microbes into chickens and table eggs.
It is recognized that prevention can be achieved by many different methods
and management systems. The objective is to prevent contamination and/or infection
through the adoption of sound farm management and product handling pratices.

Biosecurity for Poultry
Poultry operations of all kinds have become more and more sophisticated. As they become more technically efficient,
however, they also become a threat to themselves and their neighbors because of their large size and the concentration
of many birds in one space. Disaster can strike anytime unless vigilance is constant. Unless great care is taken in the farm
operation, dead birds, flies, and odors can cause neighbors to complain. Dead birds should be buried, incinerated, or
rendered promptly, and flies should be controlled because they carry disease causing organisms.

A Hatchery and Breeder Flock Sanitation Guide
A hatchery sanitation program involves more than selecting the right disinfectant. Hatchery design, isolation, good
breeder flock sanitation, and management all play a part. Because the breeder farm sanitation program is important to
the success of the hatchery, some of the more pertinent aspects will be discussed first.
The breeder farm sanitation program should provide nest clean eggs which are delivered to the hatcher in sanitized flats,
buggies and trucks. The production of clean eggs involves many different good management procedures including
management of nests, litter, ventilation, slats, waterers, and egg collection and storage.

Sanitation-Cleaning and Disinfectants
Diseases and infections have always been a major concern to the poultry industry--especially in the
hatchery. Fortunately, microbial contamination can be prevented and controlled using proper management
practices and modern health products.

Sanitation-Disinfection Basics
Reducing the load of pathogens in the environment of your flock will decrease the risk of disease. Disinfectants are
chemical agents that can kill pathogens on contact. Cleaning prior to disinfection exposes the pathogens to the
disinfectant
