Dead Bird Disposal
An unfortunate reality of animal production is death loss.
Sometimes the loss is greater than anticipated, but regardless
of the number, proper disposal of dead animals is essential.
This is particulary true for poultry farms with large numbers as well
as a small percentage of normal death loss, which can result in several
carcasses for which disposal is required. Sometimes, dead birds are treated very
routinely and disposal is by feeding to hogs, throwing them into the woods, or piling
in ditches or ravines. None of those methods are acceptable.

problems if the birds are not disposed of daily. Proper management of dead
birds is vital from the standpoint of avoiding nuisance complaints.

A Cost Comparison of Composting and Incineration as Methods for Mortality Disposal
All poultry production operations have to determine how they will deal with the issue of disposal of mortality.
There are numerous methods used to dispose of the mortality and the method selected should be based upon the
situation of each particular farm and by restrictions placed upon them by regulatory agencies. Generally, these
restrictions are based upon the method's impact upon disease control, air, and water quality. In addition, some
states have passed legislation prohibiting burial or pit disposal methods.

Composting Poultry Mortality
Proper disposal of mortality is one of the daily management responsibilities of a poultry producer. At
normal mortality rates for commercial chicken or turkey flocks, producers must dispose of large
quantities of birds. The weight and volume of carcasses that growers must deal with increases
dramatically as poultry reach maturity (for example, 4 pounds each for broilers and 25 pounds for
tom turkeys).
Disposal pits, trench burial incineration, and rendering are common methods for disposing of the
mortality. Recently, composting has been added to the list of available disposal options.
